Cretaceous Crematoriums: Immersive Next.js Event Experience & Animal Rescue Fundraiser
Cretaceous Crematoriums is an annual Northern Colorado Halloween fundraiser founded by Aubrey Putnam. The free community haunted house raises support for Animal Friends Alliance through voluntary donations and a charity raffle. For the 2026 Grimmwood theme, Peakxel Studio built a case-study-ready Next.js platform for the event story, visitor information, volunteer application, donor recognition, and launch communications.

Engineering Approach
We engineered a custom Next.js 16 web application with an atmospheric forest aesthetic, neon-green accents, responsive navigation, and structured event information. The experience presents the four Grimmwood tales, a visitor guide, a live countdown, the 2020–2026 Past Haunts history, the 2025 Animal Friends Alliance fundraising milestone, community supporter recognition, the existing volunteer application, social links, and Event JSON-LD for the four confirmed operating dates.
Verified Deliverables
- Engineered and launched a custom Next.js 16 event platform for the 2026 Grimmwood campaign.
- Presented the four confirmed 2026 operating nights with a 6:30 PM opening time.
- Connected visitors to event information, the existing volunteer application, and fundraising details.
- Recognized more than 50 community supporters and documented the 2020–2026 event history.
- Recorded the 2025 milestone of $1,204 raised for Animal Friends Alliance.
Business Outcome
A theatrical, high-performance event platform that balances spine-chilling fairy-tale lore with seamless visitor planning, driving local engagement across Northern Colorado while putting the Animal Friends Alliance rescue mission front and center.

Business & Technical Hurdles
Cretaceous Crematoriums needed a permanent, credible home for the event after operating without a standalone website. The site had to keep Cretaceous Crematoriums as the main identity while presenting Grimmwood as the 2026 twisted fairy-tale theme, clearly explain free admission and fundraising, recognize more than 50 community supporters, connect volunteers to the existing application, and make the October schedule easy to understand on mobile.
Technical Audit Findings
- Core Web Vitals mobile and desktop latency profiling
- Event information hierarchy and night-of mobile usability
- Schema.org Event and Organization structured data validation
- Color contrast auditing for neon-on-dark accessibility (WCAG AA)
- Font subsetting and layout shift (CLS) prevention
Strategic Roadmap
- 1Establish Cretaceous Crematoriums as the primary identity with Grimmwood as the 2026 theme
- 2Highlight free community admission with optional raffle entries and donations benefiting Animal Friends Alliance
- 3Structure clear visitor intent paths: Schedule & Hours, What to Expect, Grimmwood 2026 Lore, Past Haunt Galleries, and Volunteer Signups
- 4Implement multi-date Event schema markup so Google and search engines surface local event dates in Northern Colorado
Technical Implementation
- Next.js 16 App Router with static pre-rendering (SSG) for instant global edge delivery
- Multi-Event Schema.org JSON-LD graph linking all 4 operating nights to the organizer and beneficiary
- Responsive mobile drawer navigation with high-contrast touch targets
- Interactive Grimmwood tale lore explorer with custom fright-level indicators
- Real-time countdown timer to Opening Night (October 23, 6:30 PM)
- Direct integration with Google Forms for scare actor and crew volunteer applications
Performance Optimization
- Responsive image delivery for desktop and mobile visitors
- Fixed media dimensions and font loading choices to reduce layout movement
- High-efficiency asset compression for atmospheric artwork
- Vercel deployment configured for a seasonal public event website
SEO & Crawlability Structure
- Granular Event Schema markup for all 4 operating dates (Oct 23, Oct 24, Oct 30, Oct 31)
- Local Northern Colorado entity targeting (Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Larimer County)
- Detailed FAQPage schema answering admission, location, parking, and raffle questions
- OpenGraph and Twitter card previews with custom Grimmwood 2026 artwork
Why Next.js Was Chosen
- Static delivery for visitors checking event information on mobile devices
- A clear component structure that can support future annual themes
- Native image and font optimization for a more stable visual experience
- Modular content areas for schedules, tales, supporter recognition, and volunteer information
Why Previous Platforms Fell Short
- Generic CMS event templates loaded bulky external scripts, sliders, and uncompressed artwork
- Lack of mobile-first architecture caused navigation and schedule readability issues in the field
- Absence of structured Event schema prevented rich search results in local Google searches
Long-Term Business Impact
- Created a permanent digital home for Cretaceous Crematoriums and Grimmwood
- Connected visitors to the established volunteer application
- Made the Animal Friends Alliance fundraising purpose and free admission easy to understand
- Showcased the history of the annual event and more than 50 community supporters
Key Insights & Lessons Learned
- Atmospheric theme design does not require sacrificing web speed or Core Web Vitals
- Clear fundraising language matters when admission is free and raffle details must remain accurate
- Event schema for individual operating nights gives search engines structured dates to interpret

A Beautiful Build
The platform needed a secure, highly visual layout to connect homeowners with builders. The previous site was built on older web technology, was visually dated, and suffered from slow mobile loading times and weak conversion performance.
The Beauty of Islam
The client wanted a clean, modern, dark-themed portal to convey high-fidelity Quranic and religious media assets. Existing options loaded slowly, suffered from layout shifts (CLS), and lacked modern accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) required for universal readability.
Vox
The founders needed to prove their Voice AI concept with an interactive MVP. The application had to process spoken startup ideas, transcribe them instantly, query LLMs to generate detailed markdown roadmaps, and support exports to Notion with minimal latency.
